Sehr seltene Bailiella sp. (cf. B. levyi) - 7,4 x 3,5 cm (größerer) aus Marokko - Tierfossil

Rarely accessible trilobites Bailiella sp. (cf. B. levyi) from the Jebel Ougnat of Morocco. | #PAIS 9559 See details in the pictures. High-resolution photos show matrix context, individual specimen, and magnified views for complete assessment. Restoration details: All natural specimens. Matriz glued after being broken at the quarry work. Dimensions Trilobite size (the bigger one, for reference): 7,4 x 3,5 cm Matrix size: 15,7 x 6,4 cm Weight: 379 g Scientific Details Species: Bailiella sp. (cf. B. levyi) Family: Conocoryphidae Order: "Ptychopariida (?)" Class: Trilobita Lithostratigraphy: Bailiella Formation (Destombes, 1985) Age: Upper Middle Cambrian Locality: Jebel Ougnat, Morocco Special notes : This is a rare and striking plate, with two trilobites belonging to the genus Bailiella, recovered from the uppermost Middle Cambrian strata of Morocco. Stratigraphically, this undescribed species holds particular significance, as it originates from the highest known level of the Moroccan Middle Cambrian sequence. The so-called Bailiella Formation was first noted by Destombes in 1985, yet a comprehensive geological and paleontological description remains incomplete. Despite its precise location, the area has only been sporadically collected from over a relatively brief period and has yielded few specimens to date. Although the Bailiella Formation extends across much of the central Anti-Atlas, it is generally poorly exposed at the surface. Weathering often shapes the lithology into steep slopes, which are largely obscured by talus deposits. As a result, fossil collection and preparation are especially challenging. The rock matrix is notably hard and bears a slight metamorphic overprint, which prevents the trilobites from splitting cleanly along natural bedding planes. Their state of preservation is exceptional—surpassing that of typical Bailiella levyi specimens from the Montagne Noire in France. Don’t miss this opportunity to own a true milestone in early arthropod evolution. Questions? We’re happy to help. Contact us for additional photos, details, or scientific references.
