Item Description:
This is a ceramic flower vase by Imai Masayuki (1930-2023), one of the most distinguished ceramic artists of contemporary Japan.
The vase is titled "Koke Dei In Ka Kabin" (Moss Clay Inlaid Flower Vase), demonstrating Imai's signature teidei-sai technique with inlaid floral patterns.
The piece features a spherical body with a gently flared rim, showcasing Imai's masterful combination of form and surface decoration.
The vessel is adorned with delicate teardrop-shaped leaf or petal motifs in soft green tones against a subtle pink-toned clay body.
These inlaid designs demonstrate the artist's renowned men-zogan technique, where colored clay is carefully embedded into the vessel's surface and fired to create permanent decorative patterns.
The organic leaf patterns encircling the body create a harmonious rhythm, reflecting Imai's deep appreciation for natural forms.
The color palette of muted greens and pinks exemplifies his celebrated taidei-sai glaze technique, inspired by the mossy hues he observed at temples and natural landscapes.
The soft, earthy tones create a serene aesthetic that enhances any floral arrangement.
The vase bears the artist's seal on the base and comes with its original wooden storage box inscribed by the artist.
The box inscription confirms the title and authenticity of the work.

Imai developed innovative techniques that revolutionized modern Japanese ceramics. His taidei-sai glaze technique, inspired by the varied green hues of moss, created uniquely subtle color effects. Throughout his distinguished career, Imai received numerous honors including membership in the Japan Art Academy, designation as a Person of Cultural Merit, and the prestigious Order of Culture. He served as executive director of Nitten and held various leadership positions in the ceramic arts community. His works are held in major museum collections and his influence on contemporary ceramic art continues through his son Imai Makimasa, who carries forward his artistic legacy.
