Early Pleistocene Marine Aggregate with Mollusks – Glacial Relict Deposit
This remarkable lot consists of two associated marine aggregate specimens from the Early Pleistocene, formed within a glacial relict deposit and recovered from approximately 90 meters below sea level. Both pieces preserve a dense assemblage of fossilized marine mollusks embedded in partially lithified sediment, offering a vivid snapshot of an ancient seabed.
The larger specimen (23 × 13 × 5.5 cm, 945 g) displays an impressive concentration of shells, including numerous bivalve valves attributable to Myrtea spinifera, clearly visible across the surface. The variety of forms and the natural arrangement of the shells within the matrix create a striking three-dimensional composition with strong scientific and aesthetic appeal.
The smaller specimen (15.2 × 6.5 × 3.5 cm, 210 g) features a particularly notable fossil: a well-preserved example of Cerithium olucastrum, accompanied by additional shell fragments and bivalve remains, again including valves of Myrtea spinifera. This piece offers excellent detail and serves as a complementary counterpart to the larger block.
Together, these specimens beautifully illustrate the diversity of Early Pleistocene marine life and the sedimentary processes that preserved it. They represent a fascinating transitional state between subfossil and fully lithified fossil material.
An exceptional set for collectors of Quaternary paleontology, teaching collections, or as a distinctive natural history display.
