Nijikaze-hai (Regenbogenwind-Schale) Sake-Schale mit Blumenverzierung von Tadataka Sudo - Keramik - Tadataka Sudo / 須藤忠隆 (b.1983) - Japan - Heisei Zeit (1989-heute)
A sake cup alive with hand-painted floral motifs, where vivid colour meets textured glaze in a celebration of contemporary Kasama ceramics.
Description:
This guinomi (sake cup), titled Nijikaze-hai (Rainbow Wind Cup), features a compact, rounded form that sits on a distinctive stepped foot ring. The exterior is decorated over a pale cream-white ground with multiple hand-painted floral designs in a vibrant palette of red, orange, yellow, green, and dark purple-black outlines.
Each flower displays a different character: some show radiating petals with fine linear hatching in red, others feature teardrop-shaped petals filled with dots and lines, while geometric, mandala-like blooms combine concentric circles and triangular elements. The motifs are rendered with confident brushwork, with each petal individually outlined and coloured to create a lively, rhythmic pattern around the vessel.
The foot area presents a layered design: a bright orange-red band encircles the lower body, below which sits a metallic bronze-coloured ring, and finally the inner foot ring in pale clay. The interior is finished with a matte, speckled teal-green glaze that provides a striking contrast to the decorated exterior. The rim shows the transition between the pale exterior glaze and the green interior.
The base displays an unglazed, pale stoneware centre surrounded by the orange and metallic bands.
Cultural & Art Context:
This cup exemplifies the colourful decorative approach found in contemporary Kasama ware. Kasama, in Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of Japan's major ceramic production centres, known for encouraging individual artistic expression while maintaining strong craft traditions. The combination of hand-drawn designs with textured glazes reflects the diverse techniques employed by Kasama potters today.
Collector Appeal:
The cup arrives with its original signed wooden box bearing the title Nijikaze-hai in stylised calligraphy. Works by Sudo are characterised by their distinctive colour palette and meticulous hand-painting. This piece offers collectors an example of contemporary Japanese ceramic artistry suited for both use and display.
