Exceptional Antique "Three Graces" Cameo by noted Carver Francesco Carnesecchi This magnificent antique shell cameo brooch is a verified work by the renowned Italian carver Francesco Carnesecchi, who was active in the mid-19th century. This specific piece depicts the classical subject of the Three Graces, a popular motif inspired by the Neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova. Details and Provenance Carver: Francesco Carnesecchi (Active c. 1820s–1870s). Carnesecchi was a prominent figure with shops in major European capitals, including Rome (Via Condotti No. 3), Paris, Naples, and London. Subject: The "Three Graces" (Euphrosyne, Thalia, and Aglaia), daughters of Zeus representing charm, beauty, and creativity. The carving follows Canova's famous dynamic composition, capturing the figures in a dancing formation with flowing drapery. Material and Age: Hand-carved from a natural shell, utilising the white upper layer for the figures against the warm orange-brown lower layer. The style and the carver's active dates place this cameo firmly in the Mid-Victorian era, likely dating circa 1850–1870. Frame: The cameo is set in a decorative, gold-tone metal frame, possibly pinchbeck featuring an ornate foliate design consistent with Etruscan Revival styles of the period.
