The text of this version identical to that published by Charles Daly in 1842. The (unsigned) “Preface of the Editor” states that “a free use” had been made of earlier translations (including those of Shelton, Motteux, Jarvis and Smollett), but that “too much has been either altered or re-written, throughout the whole, fairly to leave it in the name of any of its former translators.” There are also unsigned “Memoirs of Cervantes”. The frontispiece (Folkard sc.), engraved title-page (dated 1841, engr. C. Armstrong & Son) and 16 full-page illustrations are by John Gilbert, mostly signed by the artist and engraver.
