Byôbu (Faltbildschirm) - Seide, lackiertes Holz, Papier - Japan - Meiji Periode (1868-1912)
A dazzling tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined Rinpa School–style painting with subtle low-relief detailing, depicting a lush flower garden.
Tall sprays of bright white chrysanthemums dominate the composition, growing behind a thatched fence. Long blades of grass peek out from between the dense bushes.
The flower heads are delicately modelled in low relief using gofun 胡粉 (shell paste), creating depth and texture against the softly shimmering gold-toned silk ground.
The screen is bordered by two brocade silk trims: a slender ecru inner band and a broad outer band in muted blue and soft brown tones. It is set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware.
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912)
Dimensions:
Total width 372.8 cm (2 × 63.6 cm, 4 × 61.4 cm); Height 173 cm
Considering its age, the screen is in very good restored condition, with expected traces of wear on both sides, including some retouching to the gold leaf along the edges. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
This folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single, striking work of art.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
