Antike japanische Eisen-Tsuba – Sukashi mit Abumi-Hufeisen-Design - Japan - Edo-Zeit (1600-1868)
This is an antique Japanese sword guard (Tsuba) likely from the Edo period.
Design and Motif The tsuba is made of forged iron with a rustic appearance. The openwork (Sukashi) design depicts an "Abumi" (Japanese Stirrup). The Abumi is a piece of horse tack used to support the rider's foot. In the context of Samurai culture, it symbolizes equestrian skills and martial readiness, as mounted warfare was a primary discipline for high-ranking samurai. Furthermore, because one places their foot in the stirrup to mount a horse or ride, it is sometimes considered a lucky motif symbolizing "stepping forward" or "advancement" in life. The composition is simple and bold, making good use of the negative space.
Material Iron
Condition This item is an antique. As seen in the photos, there is overall rust, pitting, and wear due to age. The iron surface has a rough texture characteristic of excavated or heavily aged pieces. Please carefully review the photos to assess the condition.
