Item Description
This is an exquisite nerikomi (marbled clay) vase by Kuniaki Higashi (1941-), a distinguished Kutani ware master craftsman. The piece showcases the sophisticated nerikomi technique, where different colored clays are meticulously layered and manipulated to create stunning visual effects.
The vase features a graceful elongated form with a slender neck that gradually expands into a rounded body. The entire surface is adorned with mesmerizing horizontal striations in varying shades of blue, white, and subtle gray tones, creating a rhythmic wave-like pattern that spirals around the vessel. The neck displays a dynamic twisted pattern, while the body presents finer, more delicate parallel lines that demonstrate exceptional technical mastery.
Kuniaki Higashi, born in Ishikawa Prefecture in 1941, is renowned for his innovative approach to traditional Kutani pottery. After completing his studies at Kanazawa College of Art in 1966, he dedicated himself to reviving and refining the nerikomi technique, which had been nearly lost in Kutani ware tradition. His works are characterized by their contemporary aesthetic while maintaining deep respect for traditional craftsmanship.
The base bears the artist's signature seal "Kuniaki," confirming its authenticity. This piece exemplifies Higashi's ability to transform a traditional technique into contemporary art, making it a valuable addition to any collection of modern Japanese ceramics.
The simple yet sophisticated form, combined with the hypnotic pattern created through the painstaking nerikomi process, makes this vase a stunning decorative object that captures the essence of contemporary Kutani artistry.
