It bears the inscription "Iyo Meito" and a red seal, indicating that it was provided by an official mining and sales source, such as the Iyo Mining Office. Key Features and Performance History: Its existence has been confirmed since the Nara period, approximately 1,300 years ago, and it has laid the foundation for Japan's whetstone culture. Origin: It is made from pottery stone unique to the Iyo region of Ehime Prefecture (present-day Karakawa area of Tobe Town). Uses: It is primarily used as a medium whetstone, but its properties also make it suitable for semi-finishing. Abrasiveness and Finish: At first, it feels a little rough, but as you sharpen it, the abrasive grains become finer, resulting in a smooth, hazy, and beautifully glossy finish. Unlike the mirror finish of artificial whetstones, it produces the unique texture of natural stone. It has a high abrasive power and is compatible with various types of steel, but it can be expected to help maintain sharpness for a long time. Hardness: Hardness varies depending on the stone, but generally tends to be hard and fine-grained. Product Condition There are two whetstones, one large and one small. The larger one clearly bears the inscription "Iyo Meito." The smaller one appears to be a "koppa whetstone" (offcuts or small pieces). There are natural chips and texture inherent to natural stone, but it appears to be in good condition for use. This natural whetstone is an exceptionally valuable item for knife and blade enthusiasts. 8-15cm Total 560g (G0147)
