Made in cast bronze, these mirrors beautifully reflect the refined aesthetic of daily life in historic Japan, where practical objects were often decorated with powerful symbols of good fortune. Each mirror is richly adorned with classic auspicious motifs such as the crane and tortoise (symbols of longevity), and seasonal plants including pine, bamboo, and plum, which represent resilience, purity, and prosperity. These designs were traditionally chosen to bring happiness, long life, and good fortune to the household. Medium mirror - Signed: “Tenkaichi Hitomi Izumi-no-Kami Fujiwara Shigetsugu” (天下一人見和泉守藤原重次) “Tenkaichi” was an honorary title granted only to exceptionally skilled craftsmen recognised by the authorities of the time. The design includes the characters “Takasago” and features an elegant composition of pine, bamboo, crane, and tortoise, creating a dignified and celebratory atmosphere. Small mirror - Signed: “Fujiwara Shigenaga” (藤原重永) A delicate design featuring round crests and floral motifs such as chrysanthemum and plum. The centre bears the character “Kotobuki” (longevity / felicitations). The handle still retains its original rattan wrapping, which is a valuable surviving detail and an excellent historical reference. Large mirror - Unsigned Decorated with the Hōrai motif, a highly auspicious design bringing together the crane, tortoise, pine, bamboo, and plum as a complete set of lucky symbols. The casting is extremely detailed, showing fine craftsmanship throughout the surface. As authentic antiques, all three mirrors show age-related wear including verdigris, surface tarnish, dirt, and clouding to the reflective areas. Please refer to the photos for details.
