Museum quality unique collection set of fossil shark teeth, existing mainly of extinct shark species, such as Otodus megalodon, Isurus retroflexus, Carcharodon hastalis, etc. All fossils are from various localities in the Scheldt region in Antwerp and East Flanders, Belgium. They are from the Paleogene and Neogene (66 to 3 million years old). Several species in this collection are rare, for their locality and in general, such as Parotodus benedenii, Carcharoides catticus, Sphyrna integra, and Araloselachus vorax.
Unique partial jaw reconstructions are included in the collection, such as for Carcharinus priscus, Carcharias gustrowensis, and Notorynchus cepedianus. For each specimen, the species, genus, and family or order are mentioned, as well as their common name. The shark teeth’s position in the jaw is also determined and referenced.
For closer observation, all specimens can easily be removed from their container and attached again. They are not permanently glued to their enclosing boxes, as the attachment material is reusable.
Some interesting facts about the species in the collection:
- Carcharodon hastalis is an extinct species that was most likely a predecessor of the well known still living white shark (Carcharodon carcharias)
- Parotodus benedenii is an extinct species of shark that swam open oceans and is rarely encountered in the shallow waters that covered the region many million years ago
- The collection also contains skin denticles pods and teeth of rays, and an auditory ossicle of a dolphin, all from the same localities as the shark teeth
