This exquisite color woodblock print of urban and natural scenery was created by the prominent Japanese print artist Miyata Saburō (宮田三郎) in the 1980s–1990s. Focusing on "Shōwa-era landscape prints" as his core creative direction, Miyata is one of the representative "regional record-keeping creators" in Japan’s local print scene. Critics have described his works as "using planes instead of lines, with a simple and concise style".
On the right side of the composition stands Takasakiyama Mountain, rendered in deep and light green blocks with bold black outlines to define its structure. Below the mountain lies the Beppu cityscape, with houses simplified into beige and light red blocks, and the iconic Beppu Tower (the tower with a cross spire) clearly visible.
To the left is Beppu Bay, its surface depicted in light blue and white blocks; in the distance stretch low, rolling mountains, and the sky is dotted with geometric clouds. The foreground features simplified red-roofed cottages and black rock/slope formations, enhancing spatial depth. The work’s forms are highly generalized and geometric, abandoning realistic details and shaping figures through blocks and outlines, resulting in a strong modern sensibility. The composition adopts a slightly elevated eye-level perspective, juxtaposing mountain, city, sea, and sky with clear layers and powerful visual impact. It not only showcases the harmonious fusion of nature and urbanity in Beppu but also conveys a serene and bright atmosphere through its concise form. The title Beppu Takasakiyama (別府・高崎山), along with the artist’s signature and seal, is inscribed in the lower-right corner of the print.
Affected by the passage of time, the paper shows traces of age-related toning and mildew spots, yet the overall condition is good.
