Kakejiku 掛け軸 (hängender Wandbehang) - Maulbeerpapier, Seide - Kanô Tanyû 狩野探幽 - Japan - 19th century (spätes Edo / frühes Meiji-Zeitalter)
A nice hanging scroll 掛軸 (kakejiku) depicting Daikokuten 大黒天, one of Japan’s beloved Shichifukujin 七福神 (Seven Lucky Gods).
Daikokuten is the deity of prosperity, good fortune, abundance, and household wellbeing. He is commonly portrayed standing or seated on bales of rice, holding a lucky mallet (uchide no kozuchi), and carrying his inexhaustible treasure sack over his shoulder. Symbols that reflect his role as a bringer of wealth and happiness.
Here he is shown seated atop a rice bale, holding the mallet in his right hand before him, with his never-empty sack slung over his shoulder.
Signed and sealed in the lower right corner:
“Painted by Tanyû’sai” 探幽斎筆, with seal ‘Ushin’ 守信. This signature should be understood as an attributive homage to Kanô Tanyû 狩野探幽 rather than a work by his hand.
Rendered in colour and ink on silk. Mounted on gold-toned brocade silk.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo / Early Meiji)
Dimensions:
Scroll: Height 161 cm, Width 41 cm
