This is an authentic original Japanese woodblock print (ukiyo-e) by the celebrated master Utagawa Toyokuni III (三代 歌川豊国, 1786-1865), who is widely known and highly collected under his earlier name, Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞).
The print is from the series "Waka-zoroi Mitate Rokkasen" (和歌揃見立六家撰 - A Comparison of Six Selected Poets), published in 1858. This series is a classic example of "mitate-e" (parody or comparison prints), where Kunisada portrays the famous "Rokkasen" (六歌仙 - Six Poetic Geniuses) of the Heian period through the likeness of contemporary kabuki actors.
This specific artwork depicts two of the most iconic figures in Japanese history: the poetess Ono no Komachi (小野の小町) in the upper section and the nobleman Ariwara no Narihira (在原の業平朝臣) below. Kunisada (Toyokuni III) was the most popular and prolific artist of his time, and this print showcases his expertise in capturing theatrical expressions and intricate textile patterns.
