Sehr feine Schriftrolle „Gelber Vogel, Sakura und süßer Fisch“ – Mit der Unterschrift „Sobun“ 曽文 - Seide - Morikawa Sobun (1847-1902) - Japan - Meiji Periode (1868-1912)

The workmanlike attention to detail and depth that is the work's outstanding virtue, together with the sureness with which it handles its theme, accords well with what is known of the artist's personal integrity throughout his life. Morikawa Sobun (1847-1902) was one of the few artists of his day who carried on the orthodox style of the Shijo school amidst the prevailing eclecticism. His work, based on realism of the Shijo school, has a poetic and expressive power. He was born to a Kyoto merchant family. He was first apprenticed to Matsubara Tamaru, and, from the age of twenty he began to study with Maekawa Gorei and started to learn painting. Sobun also sought guidance from the painter Hasegawa Gyokuho, who was working in Omi. His steady efforts eventually brought him into his own as an artist. When the Kyoto Municipal School of Painting was established in 1880, Sobun was brought in as a member of the faculty. In addition, two years later his 'Autumn in Takao' was selected for the First Paris-Japan Fine Arts Exhibition. He was also awarded a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1900 in Paris. In later years, he served as a judge for the Japan Art Association and was active as a painter who was at the center of the Kyoto art world for a period of time. His painting could be found in museums worldwide, such as British museum, Ashmolean museum, Seattle Art museum, etc. Coming with inscribed tomobako. Roller ends: wood. Measurements: Scroll: 190 x 53 cm Picture: 105 x 41 cm Very good condition, there are signs of wear due to age and use, stains, marks; please, see pictures for actual condition.
