Zierornament - Japan - Bronze Brüllender Drache
須賀松園 Suga Shoen (1898-1974)
A metal caster from Toyama Prefecture. He learned wax-mold casting techniques from his father, the first-generation Shōen, and succeeded to the name Shōen II in 1935. In 1943, he received a Special Selection award at the Ministry of Education Art Exhibition, followed by numerous other awards. In 1974, he was designated a Living National Treasure for wax-mold casting.
Crafted by Suga Shōen (1898–1974), a master of wax‑mold bronze casting and later designated a Living National Treasure, this bronze roaring dragon okimono displays the technical precision and expressive force that defined his work. The dragon’s body coils in a powerful arc, its scales sharply modeled and its whiskers, claws, and horns rendered with the crisp detail characteristic of Shōen’s workshop. The creature’s open‑mouthed roar and forward‑driving posture give the sculpture a sense of motion and vitality, while the warm bronze surface enhances the depth of the modeling. Measuring 31 × 20 × 12 cm and weighing 2.02 kg, the piece balances presence with refinement, embodying both the symbolic strength of the dragon and the sculptor’s mastery of traditional casting techniques. A compelling example of Shōen’s ability to merge mythic imagery with meticulous craftsmanship.
