Actor Portrait (役者絵) - Torii Kiyomitsu (鳥居清満,1735–1785) - Japan (Ohne mindestpreis)

Title: Actor Portrait (役者絵) Artist: Torii Kiyomitsu (鳥居清満,1735–1785) Medium: Woodblock print Sheet size: 42.5 × 29.7 cm (16.73 × 11.69 in) Mount board size: 50.8 × 39.3 cm (20.00 × 15.47 in) Paper: Washi paper(和纸) Publisher: Iwataya (本岩屋) This woodblock print is by the major Edo-period ukiyo-e master Torii Kiyomitsu (鳥居清満), created in the mid-18th century, circa 1763–1773. The composition depicts a Kabuki actor in elaborate theatrical costume, seated before an arrow rack, holding an arrow. His pose and facial expression carry strong dramatic tension. The intricate patterns on the garments and the color composition create a powerful theatrical effect. The neatly arranged arrows in the background are a classic motif of traditional Japanese samurai imagery, further emphasizing the character’s warrior role. Brightly colored and executed with bold, fluent lines, this work is typical of Torii Kiyomitsu’s mature style. On the right, the vertical inscription reads “Torii Kiyomitsu ga” (鳥居清満画), with the artist’s square seal “Kiyomitsu” (清満) beneath it. The rectangular seal at the lower left reads “Iwataya” (本岩屋), the publisher’s mark of the Edo-period publisher. Torii Kiyomitsu belonged to the Torii school, the leading ukiyo-e lineage focused on Kabuki actor portraits. He was the third-generation head of the school and son of Torii Kiyomasu II. He inherited and elevated the school’s tradition of Kabuki actor portraits, bringing the genre to new heights and laying the foundation for the golden age of ukiyo-e. Condition note: Due to its age, the sheet shows natural age-related signs including toning (yellowing) from oxidation, worm holes, creases, and small losses / edge wear, consistent with an authentic Edo-period original print. - The picture is part of the description. The color of the item may be slightly different from the picture (due to camera and screen settings). - The successful bidder will be responsible for any customs duties and taxes (if applicable). - This item will be mailed by the postal service of Taiwan in the form of airmail with insurance attached.
