About the publisher
Katō Print Institute, the renowned shin hanga publisher, released a limited edition of 150 sets of Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. The prints in the set display excellent quality and perfect registration. A distinctive feature of this edition is the use of imported chemical dye, Prussian blue. In the additional ten prints, black ink is used for the key block, while Prussian blue is used for the other thirty-six prints. Together, they offer an authentic representation of how the originals from Edo looked on Hōsho paper.
Dynamic Equestrian Scene with Mount Fuji
A thrilling moment of motion and energy: three galloping horses thunder past a roadside bulletin board (kosatsu-ba), their riders' garments billowing dramatically in the wind.
Hokusai captures the raw power and speed of the horses with remarkable skill—you can almost hear their hoofbeats. The artist's attention to detail is exceptional: close examination reveals the intense expressions in the horses' eyes, adding psychological depth to this vigorous scene.
In the background, Mount Fuji rises in delicate pale red tones, providing a serene contrast to the explosive movement in the foreground. This juxtaposition of tranquil landscape and dynamic action is characteristic of Hokusai's masterful compositions.
The kosatsu-ba (official notice board) in the lower right grounds the scene in everyday Edo-period life, while the racing horses suggest urgency—perhaps official messengers or travelers on an important journey.
An outstanding example of Hokusai's ability to convey movement, emotion, and atmospheric energy. The print demonstrates why he remains unmatched in depicting both the human world and the natural landscape in perfect harmony.
