Japanischer Teezeremonie-Deckelablage — Stille aus Bronze, für die Hände des Tees - Bronze - Soushin Ichinose Ⅳ 四代目 一ノ瀬宗辰 - Japan - Heisei Zeit (1989-heute)
This is a finely crafted Kasha-style Futaoki (蓋置 - lid rest), made by the respected Japanese artisan Soushin Ichinose Ⅳ (四代目 一ノ瀬宗辰). Designed for use in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, this bronze piece features an intricate, architectural form inspired by the kasha (incense burner). The lid is finely pierced and textured, evoking classical motifs with great attention to detail, while the body features a pedestal structure with symmetric incised patterns.
Futaoki are essential tools in the tea ceremony, used to hold the lid of the iron kettle (kama) when it is removed. This piece is particularly striking not only for its functionality but also as a sculptural work of art, exemplifying refined Japanese metalwork traditions.
The item comes in its original signed wooden tomobako (storage box), which bears the artist’s signature and seal, affirming its authenticity.
About Kasha Futaoki (火舎蓋置)
A "Kasha Futaoki" is a traditional Japanese tea ceremony utensil, recognized for its distinctive form and important role among the classic seven types of "futaoki" (lid rests). Shaped like a small censer with a decorative cover, the kasha futaoki is modeled after a lidded incense burner (known as "kasha" or "hoya"), and it serves as a refined platform for temporarily placing the hot lid of the kettle during a tea gathering.
The kasha futaoki is considered the most prestigious among the seven futaoki shapes, customarily reserved for formal settings and special tea presentations on display shelves such as the nagaita (long board) or daisu (stand). Its presence signals an elevated degree of formality and is typically selected when the host wishes to highlight the dignity and tradition of the ritual. Historically, the kasha lid rest traces its inspiration to elegant Chinese imports from the Tang dynasty, and its use has been codified in classical tea texts as a hallmark of authentic and distinguished practice.
Kasha futaoki are prized by collectors for their status, craftsmanship, and ties to historic tea culture. Their presence in a set signals a thoughtful and formal approach, enhancing both the elegance and authenticity of the tea experience.
