A marine ivory okimono depicting a standing Rakan, shown holding a fruit in one hand and raising a bowl in the other. His expression is serene, and the robes are incised with delicate patterns.
At the base, a shishi is carved looking upward toward the figure. The surface displays a warm, even patina with the natural tonal variations typical of aged marine ivory.
Signed underneath the base.
---The okimono is in good condition. Ivory age cracks are present on the legs of the shishi and on the figure’s feet, along with a small losses. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
Okimono (置物), combining the kanji "oki" (置き, to place) and "mono" (物, object), refers to a decorative object meant for display. Okimono, popular in the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), were finely crafted sculptures made from materials such as ivory, boxwood, wood, and bronze.
