Description
This fibula, dated to the Medieval Crusader period, features an abstracted sun motif composed of circular and radial arrangements on the front. From Antiquity onward, the sun symbol has been associated with life and divine order; in the Middle Ages, these meanings were reinterpreted within Christian thought as expressions of divine light, spiritual guidance, and protection. The motif’s expression through geometric relief rather than figurative depiction is consistent with the symbolic abstraction characteristic of the Crusader era.
The integrated fastening/suspension loop on the reverse indicates that the fibula was designed as a secure garment fastener. Formed as a single piece with the metal body, this construction reflects the period’s emphasis on functional metalwork. In this context, the object may be understood as an accessory that combines symbolism, belief, and practical use, carrying apotropaic connotations and subtly expressing the wearer’s cultural and religious identity.
