Tsurezure つれづれ|Uemura Shoen 上村松園(うえむらしょうえん)
“Tsurezure” by Uemura Shoen is one of her representative bijin-ga works, created in pursuit of paintings described as “jewel-like masterpieces with a refined and pure feeling, free from any vulgarity,” and as reaching “the ultimate realm of truth, goodness, and beauty.”
This work possesses deep narrative qualities and psychological depiction, portraying a woman who seems to speak quietly to the viewer’s heart.
The female figure at the center of the composition appears calm and introspective, as if lost in thought.
Rather than depicting beauty alone, the work seeks to express the inner state of “tsurezure,” meaning boredom, contemplation, or a sense of solitude, within the woman’s mind.
