They employ the traditional nashiji lacquer, kirikane and Korin maki-e techniques, with a warm, golden-brown base exhibiting a fine, granular sheen, resembling the skin of a ripe autumn pear—elegant, profound, and distinctly characteristic of the era. The trays depict natural scenery in the Korin style: The foreground features a combination of bamboo, pine, and plum (the Three Friends of Winter), symbolizing purity, resilience, and good fortune; The branches and leaves are outlined with flowing gold maki-e lines, accented with silver maki-e and cut gold, creating a layered effect of interplay between gold and silver; The composition is well-balanced, with appropriate use of negative space, embodying typical Rinpa decorative aesthetics—simple, highly decorative, and poetic. The trays are nested, allowing the two pieces of different sizes to be stored together, saving space and facilitating display and use.
