Butsudan - Holz - 1900-1910, 1910-1920, 1920-1930 - Nose Myoken Bosatsu Zushi

能勢妙見菩薩 Nose Myoken Bosatsu Bodhisattva (Venerable Star King) Gohonzon wooden statue in Zushi / Gilt lacquered Miniature Shrine with Double Doors 能勢妙見菩薩 Nose Myoken Bosatsu is a "star Buddha" that is the buddhified form of the North Star. The Myoken bosatsu is considered the center and root of the universe and is the highest among the stars. The sword, the raised finger represent a cross. Takayama Ukon, a feudal lord who ruled Nose, was a devoted Christian. This wooden statue of Nose Myoken Bosatsu is enshrined in a gilt‑lacquered miniature zushi, its interior creating a luminous setting for the deity known as the Buddhist manifestation of the North Star. Myoken is revered as the cosmic axis—the point around which all celestial movement is ordered—and is regarded as the highest among the star deities in esoteric belief. The figure’s poised stance, with sword in hand and one finger raised, has long been interpreted as a gesture of guidance and protection, and in the region of Nose it also carries a historical resonance: the local Christian daimyo Takayama Ukon is known to have encouraged a unique blending of symbolism, giving this icon an added layer of cultural depth. The shrine’s gold interior enhances the quiet intensity of the carving, allowing the dark wooden figure to stand out with a sense of solemn presence. As a devotional object, the zushi preserves the intimate scale and contemplative atmosphere traditionally associated with household worship. This piece brings together regional history, celestial symbolism, and refined craftsmanship in a compelling and meaningful form.
