Großer Chokwe Prestige-Thron – Ahnenmasken – handgehämmerte Kupfer- und Messingnägel – - Chokwe - DR Kongo

This monumental ceremonial throne is a superb example of Chokwe prestige art, originating from the border regions of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Traditionally, such thrones were reserved for chiefs or high-ranking individuals to display their political status and deep connection to their ancestors. Crafted from hand-carved hardwood, the chair is densely decorated with intricate figures and symbolic masks. The backrest features a central human figure in a protective stance, surrounded by the iconic 'Pwo' (female ancestor) masks, which are easily recognized by the traditional 'cingelyengelye' cross markings on the forehead. This theme of protection continues throughout the frame, where the legs and crossbars are adorned with smaller carved heads, symbolically guarding the sitter from all directions. The craftsmanship is further elevated by the exceptional metalwork. The chair is finished with hand-hammered copper cladding on the armrests and frame, secured with numerous copper and brass studs. In Chokwe culture, the inclusion of such metalwork was a clear sign of great wealth and the owner's importance within the community. Condition & Provenance Dating presumably from the mid-20th century (ca. 1950-1970), or possibly earlier (ca. 1910 - 1930), the chair remains in good vintage condition with a rich, dark patina. There is a structural shrinkage crack in the wooden seat; this is a natural occurrence in solid tropical hardwood over time due to climate changes. The crack is stable and does not affect the chair's structural integrity, but it could be professionally restored or filled if the new owner prefers a seamless look. Dimensions Height: 130 cm Width: 83 cm Depth: 65 cm About 25 kg The chair is currently located in Stavanger, Norway. Due to the significant size and weight of this piece, transport must be arranged mutually between the buyer and the seller after the auction. I am more than happy to assist with providing specific details for courier quotes or facilitating a local pickup. The shipping prices displayed with this add do not apply.
