Purchased from a highly reputable retired restaurateur in the north of Spain, this is pure history. A must try for any collector who wishes to understand a classic Rioja fully matured. Fill level is fair for its age. No leaks, cork seems fine - you can read the vintage - and the capsule is holding great for its age. The wine coulour (see pictures) is perfect. About Marques de Riscal Gran Reserva 1954 --------------------------------------------- Ruby red, with a slightly brick-red rim color. Good intensity on the nose, with a clarity that immediately indicates a quality bottle. Hints of liqueur-like fruit, smoke, coffee beans, a balsamic note, pipe tobacco, oriental spices, and a certain minerality. With more aeration, it develops that gamey, bloody bouquet so typical of these wines, with a touch of rust. Very good. On the palate, it confirms its perfect condition; everything is perfectly balanced, resulting in a fine and elegant wine with a touch of acidity, minimal harshness, and a long finish where the liqueur-like fruit and spice notes stand out, with polished tannins in a truly enjoyable whole. The 1940s and 50s were a golden age for Riscal with its famous "Cuvées Médoc," which, as in this case, had a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, giving them a certain Bordeaux character.
