Description:
This large hand-blown glass vase is defined by its monumental scale and layered coloration. Rising from a tapered cobalt blue pedestal base, the body expands into a broad, bulbous form. Across its surface, bands of vivid crimson, soft white, and deep orange move horizontally, creating a cloud-like sequence of color transitions within the glass.
From the shoulder into the neck, the Kimpaku technique introduces fine gold leaf inclusions suspended in translucent red glass. These delicate particles gather into petal-like patterns that shift subtly with the light. Two applied S-curved handles are attached at the neck, each terminating in a tight volute. The surface is finished with a soft satin frosting, diffusing light evenly across the volume. The underside bears the artist’s hand-incised signature.

Artist Profile:
Koji Ishii (1946–1996) was a pioneering figure in Japanese glass art and played a significant role in establishing glass as a fine art medium in postwar Japan. After graduating from Tokyo Gakugei University, he founded the Ishii Glass Studio in Aomori in 1977, creating a base for independent studio glass production at a time when the field was still developing in Japan.
His work is recognized for its technical innovation and expressive use of color, combining complex layering, inclusions, and sculptural form. Ishii exhibited frequently at the Japan Craft Exhibition and held numerous solo exhibitions at major department stores including Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya, positioning him within the central arena of contemporary Japanese craft presentation.
He passed away suddenly in Aomori in 1996 at the height of his career. Despite his relatively short life, his approach to color, surface treatment, and spatial composition remains influential within contemporary Japanese glass practice.
