Its rich relief decoration and warm brown glaze make it a striking and highly decorative collector’s piece. The cylindrical body with straight sides and a small upright neck is lavishly adorned in applied relief (pastillage). A courting couple – a gallant and his lady – is repeated four times around the circumference, framed by delicate floral motifs. The scene is enclosed between two continuous garlands of vine leaves and grape clusters, symbolising abundance and conviviality. The nuanced brown glaze enhances the depth of the modelling and highlights the fine detailing typical of Beauvaisis production.
