Antoni Clavé (1913-2005) - Le Roi pepe

Le Roi pepe|Antoni Clavé This lithograph titled “Le Roi pepe” is a work by Antoni Clavé. From the 1950s to the 1960s, Clavé produced numerous series featuring playing cards, medieval knights, and kings as motifs. The image of the “king” seen in “Le Roi pepe” is depicted as a symbolic figure that appears humorous rather than imposing, and at times carries a sense of melancholy. The use of vivid colors placed within a dark tonal composition has been described as a fusion of the traditions of his native Spain and the refinement of Paris. --- Artist Profile Antoni Clavé was born in 1913 in Barcelona, Spain. From the age of 13, he worked as an apprentice house painter while attending night art school. He began creating magazine illustrations and advertising posters, and at the age of 18 devoted himself exclusively to painting. In 1936, he fought on the side of the Popular Front during the Spanish Civil War. Following the defeat of the Popular Front in 1939, he fled to Montparnasse in France, where he created works inspired by artists such as Bonnard. In 1944, he met his compatriot Pablo Picasso, which had a decisive influence on his work. From the 1950s onward, he gained international recognition and held exhibitions in various locations. He received awards at the Venice Biennale in 1956 and the São Paulo Biennale the following year, and in 1984 he was selected to represent Spain at the Venice Biennale. He was active not only in painting but also in objects, sculpture, and printmaking. He passed away in 2005. --- Accessories None. --- Dimensions & Weight Height 76.5 cm Width 56 cm Weight 96 g --- Technique & Condition Lithograph on BFK Rives paper.
