At the end of 2020, Douglas Laing & Co. once again expanded its popular Old Special series, this time with "The Midnight Series". It consists of whiskies aged in sherry casks and bottled in a single cask version. The label with the slumbering moon clearly suggests an evening, contemplative sipping of these whiskies. The North British presented here, distilled in March 2003, spent 18 years in a refilled sherry butt cask no. DL 15144, and was bottled at 48.4% abv in June 2021 in an edition of 788 bottles. North British Distillery is owned by Lothian Distillers, a joint venture formed from the capital of Diageo and Edrington Group (50% stake each). The plant can produce 70 million liters of spirit per year, and the main mashed grain is corn. Nose: milk chocolate, maple syrup, milk fudge, brown sugar, shredded coconut, raisins, plums, hints of cinnamon, cloves and toasted oak. Palate: caramel popcorn, milk chocolate, raisins, plums, cinnamon-sprinkled apple pie, cappuccino, a dash of nutmeg and oak. Finish: quite long, with notes of toffee, caramel, raisins, prunes, allspice, cinnamon and oak.
