Vase - Bronze, Eine bronzene Vase mit einem Relief des Ryū-Drachen, der sich um den Hals windet. - Japan - Meiji-Zeit (spätes 19. Jahrhundert)
A bronze vase of globular form with a long flared neck, with dark brown patina, decorated in high relief with a ryū dragon (龍) coiling around the neck.
The smooth body is animated by the figure, with a frontal head with branching horns, a sinuous richly scaled body, and pronounced claws gripping the surface.
With the Haitōrei Edict of 1876, which forbade the samurai from wearing swords, the metal masters of the Edo period transformed their craft. They turned to creating decorative art bronzes, refining alloys and patinas of extraordinary beauty.
The vase is in good condition. There are slight signs of wear consistent with the period and natural oxidations. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
