Seiko Prospex Alpinist Automatic Japan, as everyone knows, is a country surrounded by mountains. Mountain climbers working in these rugged environments needed a watch that was robust, reliable, and built to withstand extreme conditions. In 1959, Seiko created just that: the Seiko Alpinist. The Seiko Alpinist was exactly what Japanese mountaineers were looking for. It featured a dust- and dirt-resistant case construction and was highly shock-resistant. The movement inside the Alpinist also allowed climbers to make precise time measurements—critical in high-altitude expeditions. The first Alpinist model was initially produced for the Japanese domestic market and remained a popular choice among enthusiasts for years. The SARB017 Alpinist, one of the most iconic models in Seiko’s history, gained such strong demand that it was eventually launched in the European market. As with previous JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) models, Seiko has reorganized these into new product lines—this time under the Prospex series. New color variants have since been added to the existing Alpinist lineup. SPB121 is the Prospex version of the SARB017 model and features Seiko’s newly developed automatic 6R35 movement.
