Figurine - 2 Charming Dogs (2) - Metall

This is a charming pair of dog sculptures by the Japanese sculptor Saegusa Motaro (三枝惣太郎), presented together on a black display base. The two figures – a larger and a smaller dog – are modeled in a highly stylized and rounded form, emphasizing volume, texture, and expressive character rather than strict realism. Both dogs feature compact, heart-like bodies with short legs, softly closed eyes, and slightly raised muzzles, creating a serene and affectionate presence. The surfaces are richly textured with sculptural tool marks, giving the works a tactile quality that enhances their artistic depth. The soft green patinated finish evokes aged bronze, suggesting the aesthetic of modern Japanese art casting. The composition conveys warmth and harmony, possibly representing a parent and child or a symbolic family motif. Such themes are common in postwar Japanese sculpture, where simplified forms and emotional expression became central elements. The original paper biography sheet and artist identification are included, confirming the maker as Saegusa Motaro. The works are estimated to date from the late Showa period (昭和後期, circa 1970s–1980s). Please note that the black display base (plastic) has a visible crack, as shown in the photographs. The sculptures themselves remain in good overall condition. Artist / Maker Information Saegusa Motaro (三枝惣太郎) was a Japanese sculptor active during the Showa period (昭和時代, 1926–1989).
