Carved wooden monkey figure – Bulu style, southern Cameroon
A standing monkey (chimpanzee) figure carved from a single piece of wood. The arms are brought forward along the body with the hands resting on the belly – the characteristic posture of Bulu primate sculptures. The head shows typical simian features: a protruding muzzle, a pronounced brow, round ears and small eyes. The forehead, the belly (rib-like pattern), the hands and the feet are decorated with incised lines that stand out lighter against the dark brown, glossy surface. The figure stands on an oval base.
Background:
The Bulu of southern Cameroon belong to the wider Beti-Fang group. Great apes – gorillas (ngi) and chimpanzees – hold a central place in their spiritual tradition, where they were regarded as ancestral and protective figures and were connected with rites such as the ngi/ngil society. Bulu primate figures are known for their rounded, simple forms and for capturing the posture of the animal with great accuracy. This carving tradition has continued into the present day.
Details:
Object: standing monkey figure
Style / culture: Bulu (Fang group), southern Cameroon
Material: carved wood, dark brown patina
Period: 1980–1990, carved in the traditional style
