Item Description:
肥沼美智雄 Koinuma Michio(1936–2020)
This large yakishime (unglazed high-fired stoneware) serving plate is a work by Koinuma Michio, a singular and highly individualistic ceramic artist rooted in the Mashiko tradition.
The piece showcases his mastery of the mon-iri zogan (patterned inlay) technique: incised geometric motifs are precisely inlaid against the dense, dark, iron-rich clay body that was fired at extremely high temperatures without glaze, resulting in a hard, almost metallic surface reminiscent of ancient bronzeware and archaeological artifacts.
The stark contrast between the impressed pattern and the richly textured, darkened ground gives the plate a powerful archaeological presence that is simultaneously archaic and strikingly modern.
This is a functional yet deeply sculptural work, equally at home on the dining table or displayed as a collector's piece.

Artist Profile
Koinuma Michio (1936–2020, Tokyo) was a solitary and unconventional ceramic artist known for his deeply individual approach to stoneware. As a child, he participated in archaeological excavations, an experience that permanently shaped his aesthetic sensibility. After studying politics and economics at university, he abandoned academia to pursue ceramics, eventually establishing his kiln "Ichimoku-gama" in Mashiko in 1970. Inspired by ancient earthenwares, haniwa, and bronze vessels, he developed a distinctive style characterized by high-fired, unglazed surfaces with an almost metallic, dark, smoldering quality. His works won the Excellence Prize at the Kita-Kanto Art Exhibition and were featured in numerous solo exhibitions. He received the Tochigi Prefecture Marronnier Cultural Award in 1991. Koinuma's oeuvre spans tea ware, flower vessels, and powerful sculptural objects, all united by his uncompromising personal vision.
