Lehmann - Blechspielzeug - Lehmann EPL 656 Vineta Monorail Cabin - Deutschland

E.P. Lehmann “Vineta” No. 656 – early experimental gyroscopic tinplate toy, c. 1913 Object: Ernst Paul Lehmann (EPL) “Vineta” No. 656 Type: Tinplate mechanical novelty / experimental toy Period: c. 1913 (pre-WWI) Origin: Germany Length: approx. 25 cm This is an original Ernst Paul Lehmann (EPL) “Vineta” No. 656, an early 20th-century tinplate mechanical novelty that reflects a highly experimental phase in toy engineering. Unlike conventional cars or trains of the period, the Vineta was conceived as a concept-driven mechanical curiosity, inspired by contemporary ideas around mono-rail and gyroscopic stabilisation. It represents Lehmann’s attempt to explore a radically different principle of balance and motion at a time when mechanical toys themselves were still in an early stage of development. What makes this piece particularly special is that this concept did not evolve into a long-running series with multiple variants. In contrast to standard Lehmann automobiles or railway items (which exist in numerous models and generations), the Vineta appears to remain a singular experimental direction in Lehmann’s production. This gives the model a distinctly experimental and historically interesting character, rather than being “just another” early tin toy. Condition and originality The toy is in structurally very good original condition for its age (over 100 years). • The body is solid with no loose parts. • The underside appears well preserved, suggesting it has spent much of its life protected from wear. • Surface wear, patina and age-related signs are present and consistent with an unrestored pre-WWI tinplate toy. • No modern replacement parts observed. Mechanism and handling The internal mechanical/gyro-based construction has not been tested, out of respect for the age and fragility of the piece. The toy has not been opened, and remains 100% original and unrestored. Given the experimental nature of the design, and the historical context, these models were never intended to perform reliably by modern standards. This example is therefore offered as a collector’s and historical curiosity, not as a functional toy. Markings The underside shows period markings including Lehmann branding and patent references, consistent with early EPL production. Collector’s note This is a collector-grade curiosity from the formative years of mechanical toy development. It illustrates a moment when leading manufacturers such as Lehmann were willing to pursue bold, technically ambitious concepts that ultimately remained one-off experiments rather than commercially continued product lines. As such, it stands apart from more common early tinplate vehicles and trains. Shipping: Shipping is insured and tracked. The item will be carefully packed to protect the original tinplate surface and mechanical components. Dispatch within 1–3 business days after payment. Combined shipping is not available for this lot. All customs duties, VAT and import fees are the buyer’s responsibility. These costs are not included in the purchase price or shipping cost and may vary depending on the destination country. #classictoys

E.P. Lehmann “Vineta” No. 656 – early experimental gyroscopic tinplate toy, c. 1913

Object: Ernst Paul Lehmann (EPL) “Vineta” No. 656
Type: Tinplate mechanical novelty / experimental toy
Period: c. 1913 (pre-WWI)
Origin: Germany
Length: approx. 25 cm

This is an original Ernst Paul Lehmann (EPL) “Vineta” No.

Condition and originality
The toy is in structurally very good original condition for its age (over 100 years).
• The body is solid with no loose parts.
• The underside appears well preserved, suggesting it has spent much of its life protected from wear.
• Surface wear, patina and age-related signs are present and consistent with an unrestored pre-WWI tinplate toy.
• No modern replacement parts observed.

Mechanism and handling
The internal mechanical/gyro-based construction has not been tested, out of respect for the age and fragility of the piece. The toy has not been opened, and remains 100% original and unrestored.
Given the experimental nature of the design, and the historical context, these models were never intended to perform reliably by modern standards. This example is therefore offered as a collector’s and historical curiosity, not as a functional toy.

Markings
The underside shows period markings including Lehmann branding and patent references, consistent with early EPL production.

Collector’s note
This is a collector-grade curiosity from the formative years of mechanical toy development. It illustrates a moment when leading manufacturers such as Lehmann were willing to pursue bold, technically ambitious concepts that ultimately remained one-off experiments rather than commercially continued product lines. As such, it stands apart from more common early tinplate vehicles and trains.
