The face is painted in deep vermilion red with contrasting black detailing around the brows, mane, and jawline. The carving is bold and dynamic: thick, swirling eyebrows sit above prominent, rounded eyes finished in a metallic gold tone that gives them a striking, almost animated presence. The nose is broad and rounded, and the mouth opens wide in a dramatic expression. From the angled and frontal views, the hinged lower jaw is clearly visible. The mouth opens fully, revealing individually carved square teeth painted in a warm ochre-gold. The interior is hollowed, suggesting it was designed to be worn or manipulated. The interior construction shows a crossbar support, typical of masks intended for performance rather than purely decorative display. The sides extend into curved ear or horn-like projections, painted black and red, adding to the fierce silhouette. The layered carving of the mane and brows enhances the sense of movement and vitality. Such masks are commonly associated with Shishimai (lion dance) performances in Japanese festivals and shrine rituals. The exaggerated features—bulging eyes, wide mouth, and articulated jaw—are meant to appear powerful and protective. The lion-dog figure traditionally wards off evil spirits and brings good fortune.
