A Japanese hanging temple bell (Tsurigane) dating from the Edo to Meiji period (late 19th – early 20th century).
The bronze bell is richly decorated with cast inscriptions and ornamental bands in relief. Prominent large characters include:
「寺」 (Temple)
「山」 (Mountain)
「寒」 (Cold)
「古」 (Ancient)
Additional inscriptions visible around the body include:
「佛日」 (Buddha Sun)
「増輝」 (Increasing Radiance)
「帝道」 (Imperial Way)
「退呂」
「皇国」 (Imperial Nation)
「激国」
「法輪」 (Dharma Wheel)
「常𨍭」 (Eternal Turning – referring to the turning of the Dharma wheel)
The bell features a traditional arched suspension loop at the top and is accompanied by a wooden display stand with openwork decorative elements, as well as a striker (stick). The combination creates an attractive and complete display set.
A fine example of a Japanese inscribed bronze temple-style bell from the Edo to Meiji era, ideal for collectors of Asian art, Buddhist objects, and antique metalwork. The complete set with stand and striker enhances both its display and historical appeal.
