René Lalique - Metall - Brosche - Spange „Lézards“
René Lalique (1860-1945). Barrette brooch “Lézards”, a model designed in 1912, one of Lalique’s most iconic naturalistic themes, where reptiles and foliage become pure Art Nouveau ornament. Lalique was already internationally celebrated by this period for reinventing jewellery through sculptural design and innovative materials, moving beyond traditional gemstones to highlight the artistic power of glass itself.
This barrette features a molded-pressed glass panel (verre moulé-pressé) in a warm yellow-green to honey tone, enhanced by a reflective backing that intensifies the depth and glow of the relief. The décor shows stylised lizards in low relief, a motif strongly associated with Lalique’s world of metamorphosis and nature symbolism, and emblematic of French Art Nouveau jewellery at its most collectible. Set in a metal mount with pin fitting.
The piece is unsigned, however the attribution is supported by the documented model and the identical moulded décor known for this design.
Provenance: from a Paris private collection, acquired through a French auction house.
Condition: very good overall condition, with light wear and small surface scratches consistent with age, notably on the base and mount.
Measurements: length approx. 7 cm.
Bibliography: Félix Marcilhac, René Lalique, catalogue raisonné (jewellery), model referenced as no. 1356 bis, designed 1912.
