A lacquered and russet-iron sujibachi kabuto 筋鉢兜 (helmet with raised ridges) fitted with a ‘Daikoku’s rat’ maedate (decorative front crest).
The russet-iron helmet bowl is constructed of sixty-two plates and topped with a five-tiered chrysanthemum-form tehen no kanamono 天辺の金物 (apex fitting).
The mabisashi (visor) has a gilt-copper rim adorned with refined scrolling motifs, and is lacquered in vibrant vermilion on the underside. It is mounted with a gilt-wood maedate in the form of Daikoku’s rat, rising before a golden sun. The rat is an auspicious attribute associated with the deity of wealth and good fortune.
The upturned, back-bending fukigaeshi (face guards) are covered in richly decorated gilt leather with floral sprays. Below is a four-lame black lacquered itazane shikoro (neck guard). The components are predominantly laced in navy blue, finished with a multicoloured and faded golden silk-laced hem. The reverse is adorned with a golden silk agemaki (decorative tassel).
