Renowned both for her exceptional waka poetry and her legendary beauty, Komachi is counted among the Rokkasen (Six Poetry Immortals) of early Japanese literature. In Noh theatre and classical Japanese art, Rōjō Komachi depicts the poet in old age, often portrayed as a once-beautiful woman who has fallen into poverty and solitude. The character reflects Buddhist themes of impermanence, emphasising the fleeting nature of youth, beauty, and worldly status.
