Wayang Topeng masks are important elements of Javanese performing arts and are used in traditional masked dance dramas. Each mask represents a different character and personality from classical stories such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana, ranging from noble heroes and refined court figures to demons and comic characters. Two of the masks bear the stamp “LEDJAR YOGYAKARTA” on the interior. These marks are believed to be associated with the workshop tradition surrounding Ki Ledjar Soebroto (1938–2017), a highly respected mask maker and puppeteer from Yogyakarta who played an important role in preserving and promoting Javanese puppet and mask traditions. The masks are hand-carved from wood and carefully painted in vivid traditional colours, with expressive facial features typical of Wayang Topeng performance masks. The masks show signs of age and use including minor paint wear, small chips, surface scratches, dirt, discolouration, and natural aging of the wood. Overall fair to good used condition for traditional performance masks. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx.
