Marine-Encrusted Flip-Flop – Palawan, Philippines
An unusual and visually striking object: a plastic flip-flop sandal completely encrusted with marine life, found on the shores of Palawan, Philippines.
Over time, the discarded sandal became a substrate for marine organisms, gradually transforming into a remarkable natural–anthropogenic sculpture. The surface is heavily colonized by large spiny shells, including several spondylus and one lopha, along with smaller shell fragments and colonies of serpulid worms. Their growth has partially obscured the original object, creating an organic, coral-like structure that contrasts strongly with the bright blue plastic beneath.
The piece illustrates the powerful interaction between human debris and marine ecosystems, where artificial materials become part of the underwater environment and are colonized by living organisms. This process has turned a simple lost sandal into a compelling natural curiosity and conversation piece.
Mounted on a clear display stand, the object works well as a cabinet of curiosities specimen, an educational artifact about marine colonization, or a symbolic reminder of ocean pollution and environmental resilience.
Measurements: 24.5 × 19 × 5.5 cm
