Rare Wooden Presentation Bowl – Chief, Marovo Lagoon, Solomon Islands
A finely carved wooden presentation bowl from the Marovo Lagoon region of the Solomon Islands, traditionally associated with local chiefs.
The bowl is decorated with elegant relief carvings depicting a frigate bird and fish, powerful symbols within the maritime culture of the Solomon Islands. The frigate bird represents mastery of the sea and sky, while fish symbolize abundance and the importance of the ocean in daily life.
Such bowls were used during ceremonial presentations of food, especially during gatherings where status and generosity were displayed by community leaders.
