[Title] Box – Yakumo-nuri Lacquer Bunko with “Goshoguruma” Imperial Carriage – Tangoya – Showa Period – Tomobako [八雲塗 御所車 文箱] [Description] An elegant Japanese lacquer document box (Bunko) crafted using the traditional Yakumo-nuri technique from Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. This refined piece was produced by the respected lacquer workshop Tangoya, known for its high-quality regional craftsmanship. The lid is beautifully decorated with a “Goshoguruma” (Imperial Carriage) motif. This classical design symbolizes the elegance and cultural refinement of Heian-period aristocracy, and is closely associated with the world depicted in The Tale of Genji. Yakumo-nuri lacquerware is distinguished by its unique layering technique. Decorative patterns are painted with colored lacquer and then sealed beneath multiple layers of translucent lacquer (suki-urushi). Over time, the upper lacquer layers gradually become more transparent, allowing the underlying design to reveal greater depth and luminosity. Both practical and decorative, this box was traditionally used for storing documents, letters, or stationery, while also serving as a sophisticated decorative object. ⸻ [Dimensions] Length: 33.5 cm Width: 23.5 cm Height: 8.0 cm ⸻ [Condition] Very good vintage condition. • The lacquer surface retains a beautiful deep shine • No major scratches, cracks, or significant damage • Includes the original signed wooden storage box (Tomobako) • Minor age-related wear to the wooden box, consistent with age We will use Japan Post or for shipping.
