Functioning as both a decorative object and a wide container, this work showcases Sakata's signature avant-garde aesthetic. The most striking feature is the base of the piece, which features his renowned "Shinjin-mon" (deep relief pattern). The spiraling, raw clay texture on the bottom creates a primitive and architectural feel. The interior and rim are covered in a thick, milky-white glaze with prominent, dark-stained crackle patterns. This contrast between the refined glaze and the raw, rugged clay reflects the "Wabi-Sabi" philosophy in a modern context. At nearly 25cm wide, this piece has a significant presence. Sakata's work often blurs the line between functional pottery and pure sculpture. The artist's mark is visible at the glaze boundary. Mashiko ware originated in the late Edo period in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture, and is celebrated for its earthy textures, durability, and strong handmade character. Sakata Jinnai (b. 1943) is a distinguished Japanese artist celebrated for his innovative Black Pottery. A student of the legendary Hamada Shoji, Sakata established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966. His career spans decades of international exhibitions, from Takashimaya to New York and Shanghai, and his practice has evolved to include glass, washi, and bonsai. Exploring cosmic and natural themes, his status as a master is evidenced by his dedications of work to Japan’s most sacred sites, including the Ise Grand and Izumo Taisha shrines. The piece features intentional fire cracks and a rustic texture. Separately, the entire interior surface shows overall yellowing and faint staining due to age.
