Item Description
This is a complete set of 5 volumes from the prestigious Japanese art journal series Nihon no Bijutsu (Arts of Japan), published by Shibundo, Tokyo, in 1979 (Showa 54). Supervised by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Japan's three major national museums — the Tokyo National Museum, the Kyoto National Museum, and the Nara National Museum — this long-running monthly series remains an essential reference for scholars and collectors of Japanese art.
The five issues included are:
No. 156 (May 1979) — Shakyō (Sutra Copying): A scholarly exploration of the ancient Japanese practice of hand-copying Buddhist sutras, featuring rare documentary examples. Edited by Oyama Jinkai.
No. 159 (August 1979) — Tanjōbutsu (Birth Buddha Statues): A focused study on the distinctive Buddhist sculptural form of the infant Shakyamuni, richly illustrated with bronze examples. Edited by Tanaka Yoshiyasu.
No. 160 (September 1979) — Mokkan (Wooden Tablets): An in-depth examination of ancient inscribed wooden tablets used in Japan's early administrative and religious culture. Edited by Karino Hisashi.
No. 161 (October 1979) — Sōbō, Hōjō, Kura-ura (Monks' Quarters, Abbots' Chambers, and Storehouses): A lavishly illustrated survey of traditional Japanese Buddhist monastic architecture. Edited by Hattori Fumio.
No. 162 (November 1979) — Watanabe Kazan: A dedicated monograph on the celebrated Edo-period painter and intellectual Watanabe Kazan (1793–1841), featuring his refined portrait and nature paintings. Edited by Suganuma Teiзō.
All volumes were published by Shibundo (至文堂), Tokyo, and printed to the highest scholarly standards. This consecutive set spanning five months of 1979 offers a rich cross-section of Japanese art history — from Buddhist devotional objects to architecture and literati painting.
