Mask - Wè (Guéré) Volk - Afrika - Wè / Guéré Ritualmaske

Wè / Guéré Ritual Mask – Wood, Metal Studs, Raffia & Fur – Ivory Coast / Liberia – seconde part of 20th Century Description A striking traditional mask of the Wè (Guéré) people from the border region of Ivory Coast and Liberia. The mask is hand-carved from hardwood and displays the powerful and expressive features characteristic of Wè masks. The design is dominated by strongly protruding cylindrical eyes and a massive horizontal facial ridge across the nose and cheeks, giving the mask a highly sculptural and dramatic appearance. Decorative metal studs are applied along the forehead and facial ridge, a feature often seen on masks of this cultural group. The rim shows numerous perforations that originally served to attach a full fiber costume made of raffia or plant fibers. Remains of natural fibers and animal fur are still visible. The interior of the mask is deeply hollowed and shows clear signs of wear and handling, suggesting that the mask was once worn during performances or ceremonial contexts. The dark patina and traces of age further enhance the authenticity and character of the piece. Such masks traditionally represented powerful forest spirits and were used during social and ritual events including ceremonies, performances, and community gatherings. The object comes from a European household estate, therefore detailed provenance information about the previous owner is not available. Dimensions Height: 25 cm Width: 16 cm Depth: 12 cm Weight: 620 g Material Wood, metal studs, plant fibers (raffia), animal fur Estimated period Second part of 20th century Condition Good overall condition with age-related wear, small losses, cracks and traces of use consistent with age and traditional handling.
