Usaburo Kokeshi is known for its "creative kokeshi" (modern kokeshi) that breaks away from the traditional framework of traditional kokeshi. Original Design: While utilizing potter's wheel techniques, the doll features designs with bob haircuts and rounded silhouettes that blend seamlessly with modern interiors. Painting and Carving: In addition to simple brushwork, techniques such as carving that makes use of the wood's grain and "pyra-e" (heat-painting) are used. Warmth of the Material: Natural woods, such as dogwood (Mizuki) grown primarily in Gunma Prefecture, are used, giving the doll a warmth that can only be achieved through handcrafting. Product Details: Plum Blossom Design This piece features red and white plum blossoms painted on the body, and is thought to be part of a series such as "Hana Monogatari" (Flower Story) and "Kohaku Ume" (Red and White Plum Blossoms). Meaning of the pattern: Because plum blossoms bloom in the harsh winter, before any other flowers, they are considered sacred flowers that symbolize patience, the arrival of spring, and good fortune. Design: The vibrant red and white plum blossoms stand out against the muted dark (burnt) body, creating an elegant, classic impression. Artist's mark: The signature seen in the enlarged view on the right of the image is the name of the artist, Usaburo. 22*6*6cm Total 232g (I0280)
